- They provide a written price quote that is thorough and detailed. This document should spell out all of the work they plan to do for you, the type of flooring that will be used, and the price you will pay for the services. Not only is this a professional gesture, but it is a legally binding agreement that is signed between both parties.
- They check moisture levels and acclimate your flooring before installation. Wood floors swell and contract with changes in moisture and humidity, so a good contractor will ensure that your new floors are properly acclimated to your home before nailing them down. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the room temperature and relative humidity.
- They prepare the subfloor properly. The subfloor must be clean, flat and dry in order for the wood flooring to be installed correctly. If the floor is not level, the hardwoods won't be either, resulting in bouncy or squeaky floors.
- They take time to plan the layout of the boards. In order for the floor to look great, it is important to make a plan before nailing down the boards. Not all rooms are square, not all boards look alike, and there are always tricky areas like in between doorways or the tops of stairs.
- They use enough nails. This may seem simple enough, but many contractors either try to cut corners or just aren't aware of how many nails should be used to fasten the floors. Not enough fasteners will result in moving boards, squeaky floors, and possible gaps between the boards.
